A Brief History of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Charlottesville and the surrounding area. The Society was founded in 1927 by a group of local residents who were interested in preserving the history of the area.

The Society's first project was to purchase and restore Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home. The society then went on to purchase and restore other historic sites in the area, including Montpelier, James Madison's home, and Ash Lawn-Highland, James Monroe's home. In addition to purchasing and restoring historic sites, the Society also operates a museum, which houses artifacts related to the history of Charlottesville and the surrounding area.

The Society is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia.

What We Do

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Charlottesville and the surrounding area. We accomplish this through a variety of programs and initiatives.

Our most well-known program is our Historic Sites program. Through this program, we purchase and restore historic sites in the area. We have already restored several notable sites, including Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home; Montpelier, James Madison's home; and Ash Lawn-Highland, James Monroe's home.

In addition to our Historic Sites program, we also operate a museum. The museum houses artifacts related to the history of Charlottesville and the surrounding area. We offer both public and school tours of the museum.

We also offer educational programs for both adults and children. These programs are designed to teach people about the history of Charlottesville and the surrounding area.
