This Tudor style mansion was built in England in the late 15th century and was originally located in the town of Agecroft. In 1925, the mansion was dismantled and shipped to Richmond where it was rebuilt piece by piece. Today, Agecroft Hall is open to the public for tours, events, and special occasions.
History of Agecroft Hall
Agecroft Hall was built in 1469 by Sir Thomas Langley. The original house was over 500 years old when it was dismantled and shipped to America. It is one of the oldest houses in England that is still standing today. The house has been through a lot of changes over the centuries; it has been bought and sold several times, it has been expanded and remodeled, and it has even been used as a farmhouse at one point in time.
In 1925, Mrs. George DeForest Manierre of Chicago purchased Agecroft Hall with the intention of having it dismantled and shipped to the United States. Mrs. Manierre had the house rebuilt piece by piece on her estate in Lake Forest, Illinois. The house remained in the Manierre family until 1986 when it was donated to the Agecroft Partners who had it dismantled once again and shipped to Richmond, Virginia.
Agecroft Hall Today
Today, Agecroft Hall is open to the public for tours, events, and special occasions. The gardens are also open to the public daily from dawn until dusk. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the mansion or they can participate in one of the many programs offered throughout the year such as tea parties, concerts, lectures, and more.
