The Poe Museum

When you visit Richmond VA, don't miss the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. Located at 1914 E Main St, Richmond, VA 23223. Not only will you learn about one of America's most famous writers, you'll enjoy a walk through the beautiful "English style" garden. The Poe Museum is housed in the Old Stone House, Richmond's oldest home. Founders of the museum sought out anything and everything related to Poe's life and writings. These items ranged from manuscripts to trinkets. You can even view a lock of Poe's hair and socks, which were discovered in his trunk. The museum even claims to have the largest collection of Poe-related items in the world.

 

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans, and free for children aged seven to 17. Parking is available on site, and there's a gift shop. You can purchase tickets for the museum at the entrance. The museum offers discounts for seniors, AAA members, and active duty military.

 

The museum is comprised of two buildings. The Old Stone House contains the original heart-of-pine floors, a fireplace that is carved in a unique fashion, and other pieces that make the Poe Museum stand out among other historical buildings in Richmond. There's also a self-guided tour in the museum, and you can even see film adaptations of his works. In fact, Edgar Allan Poe died in Richmond, but his legacy lives on in Richmond VA.

The Poe House gift shop features works by Adrianne Draude, a local artist with a penchant for the macabre and the melancholy. The artist is proud to showcase her favorite writer and her art.
