White House of the Confederacy
The White House of the Confederacy in Richmond VA is a National Historic Landmark that was once home to the Jefferson Davis family during the Civil War. Located at 1201 E Clay St, Richmond, VA 23219. The house is now a museum that explores the Civil War and the lives of people of color in the South. The museum is well worth a visit, and is the perfect place to learn about the past and present. Here you can explore the interior of the house, and also visit the nearby Confederate Memorial Literary Society.
The city is full of Civil War history, including the famous St. John's Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Liberty or Death" speech. Richmond was also the birthplace of Edgar Allan Poe, whose museum is located in the city. In addition to historical landmarks, Richmond offers public parks, art galleries, science and technology museums, and several shopping options. The Maymont Estate is another popular attraction in Richmond. This 16th century mansion was built by a wealthy family in Richmond. The mansion itself was originally located in Lancashire, London, but it was moved to Richmond in 1928. The estate is full of art and architecture, and features a petting zoo, carriage collection, nature center, and arboretum. There's also a beautiful 12,000 square foot mansion.
The Jefferson House is the oldest remaining house from the Confederacy era. It was constructed in 1818 by Robert Mills for John Brockenbrough, the President of the Bank of Virginia. The house changed hands several times before being purchased by Lewis Dabney Crenshaw. He added a third floor to the house and rented it to the Confederate government. He never lived in the upper levels, but he visited the site.
Alice Walker is another important person of African descent in Richmond. She was born in post-Civil War Richmond and eventually became the first female bank president in the country. The Alice Walker National Park Service site is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rangers lead tours every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Did you know that the site also has a National Historic Landmark?).
Located in the heart of the Confederacy, Richmond was an important strategic center during the Civil War. The city's historic park highlights American history, and includes monuments from the 19th century. If you're a history buff, this place should be on your itinerary. There's enough to see to fill an afternoon! Just make sure you plan enough time to visit both the museum and the White House of the Confederacy.

While visiting the museum, you'll also have the opportunity to visit the famous Varian Davis Mansion. This 63-foot-tall domed structure is home to numerous exhibits, including orchid and cactus gardens. The interior is furnished in period style with Rococo-Revival furniture and flocked wallpaper. The mansion was built in 1818, and the Davis family lived in it until the evacuation of Richmond in 1865.
